This page has links to our correspondence to and with various Latvian state institutions. We have (through official correspondence) advocated for:
1. Quality education for children with dyslexia and other learning disabilities- we have informed various state institutions about violations of children's' rights to quality education. Only The State Inspectorate For Protection Of Children's Rights has responded actively and respectfully.
2. Making support measures available to children who need them- we successfully advocated for support measures including extra time for children taking state level exams in 3rd, 6th and 9th classes. Our work group participated with the State Special Education Centre and the The Centre for Curriculum Development and Examinations in drafting regulations for 3rd, 6th and 9th class tests. We were promised that regulations regarding 12th class centralized exams required for entry into university would be reopened in the autumn of 2008 and that we would be invited to participate. The state institutions have failed to do as they promised and children with learning disabilities are still to be denied accommodations for high stakes exams.
3. We have also written to the Ministry of Education and Science regarding quality of reading instruction as reflected in PISA and PIRLS,asking how they plan on responding to these results showing a significant fraction of children reading either at or below basic competency. The Ministry has chosen to disregard our concerns and instead focused on the average result rather than the considerable fraction of children in LV who read poorly.
